  • Protecting Your Client’s Next Great Script: Screenwriters & Copyright Live webcast on 6/3/11 @ 2:00 p.m. EST. This course will also be available for later online viewing.

Brief Description: A screenwriter’s greatest asset is her creativity but without
copyright protection her ideas for a great story are worth nothing.  In this program,
entertainment lawyer Eldonie Mason teaches attorneys how to advise their
screenwriter clients on protecting their copyright. After her introduction to copyright
law, Ms. Mason will discuss the seminal screenwriter case, Nichols v. Universal
Pictures Corp., and the court’s analysis of determining what parts of a play merit
copyright protection.  She will then advise you on the benefits of registering your
client’s script with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) compared to registering it
with the U.S. Copyright Office.  Finally, through a discussion of a case where the
writer claimed that his script idea was stolen by Paramount to make Eddie Murphy’s
Coming to America, Ms. Mason will provide tips for how to protect your client’s ideas
       during the script submission process.
